Tampa, FL - Tampa officials are evaluating additional locations for school zone speed cameras as the city continues efforts to improve traffic safety around schools.

City leaders are reviewing whether to install speed enforcement cameras at more school zones following the implementation of the program at several locations across Tampa.

The initiative is designed to identify drivers who exceed posted speed limits during designated school zone hours and issue citations through automated enforcement systems.

Officials say the program was created to reduce speeding in areas where students, parents, and school staff regularly cross roadways.

Data collected since the initial rollout has been used to identify locations where speeding remains a concern and where additional cameras may be beneficial.

Under Florida law, drivers recorded traveling more than 10 miles per hour above the posted school zone speed limit during active enforcement periods can receive a civil citation.

City officials have stated that warning notices were initially issued before monetary penalties began.

Transportation and safety officials are reviewing traffic patterns, vehicle speed data, and feedback from residents as they consider future camera locations.

The review includes schools where traffic volumes are high or where speeding violations have been documented.

Supporters of the program argue that automated enforcement can help improve driver behavior and enhance safety near schools.

Others have raised questions about citation volume and the expansion of camera based enforcement.

City leaders have indicated that safety remains the primary objective of the program.

No final decision has been announced regarding additional camera installations, but officials are expected to continue evaluating potential locations in the coming months.
