St. Petersburg, FL - A dog in St. Petersburg, Florida, was tragically killed after allegedly picking up a lit firework during a neighborhood display.

St. Petersburg Police say officers reached an alley near 8th Avenue South and 38th Street South at about 7:45 p.m. after callers reported an explosion that had critically wounded a loose dog.

Witnesses say that several people were allegedly lighting fireworks and tossing them behind homes when the curious animal chased one device, bit down on it, and was killed when it exploded.

Investigators have labeled the case a tragic accident rather than a deliberate attack.

A review of home security footage and interviews with neighbors showed no sign that anyone intentionally harmed the dog, according to a preliminary statement released by the department.

Because no suspect has been identified, no arrest report exists and no criminal charges have been filed.

Police are asking anyone who recorded the incident to share video so detectives can verify the timeline and determine whether fireworks regulations were violated.

Officers also reminded residents that state law restricts certain explosive devices.

The American Veterinary Medical Association warns that fireworks can cause panic, burns, and fatal injuries to pets.

Experts advise keeping animals indoors, closing blinds, and providing music or television during celebrations.
