A word of warning to business owners, be careful who hire to handle your company's finances.

The former financial controller for a Jupiter business has been sentenced to six years in prison for embezzling nearly a million dollars from Fitzhugh Holdings.

Michele Nichols had been with the company since December of 2021 and police say the owner became suspicious of the 63-year old accountant after noticing inconsistencies in expense reports and payroll analyses.

Investigators found that Nichols had been manipulating payroll systems and diverting funds into her personal accounts.

Ahead of her sentencing this week, the woman pleaded guilty to organized scheme to defraud and money laundering.
