SEBRING (WFLA News) -- Fighting this fire was "a losing proposition."
That's what Highlands County's fire chief says about the inferno that engulfed a propane warehouse between Sebring and Lake Placid Monday, destroying as many as 16 homes, as well as a shed.
Marc Bashoon says propane cylinders flew through the air, creating a hazard for firefighters and setting fires as far away as the opposite side of U.S. 27.
Two block homes and 14 mobile homes were destroyed in the blaze, as well as a shed, according to Bashoon.
A worker at the propane plant was airlifted to Tampa after suffering injuries. HCFR says 43 year old Wayne McCall is in serious condition but is talking with his family.
Firefighters remain at the scene, cooling down hot spots.
